Homework:
Start to fill out rows (across)* on the yellow reading chart. Each square = 10 minutes of reading, so if your child reads for 30 minutes, help them figure out that is equal to 3 squares.
*rows & columns are math vocabulary that 3rd graders  need to learn this year. rows are horizontal, columns are vertical. We cover this when reading maps, graphs and when learning about multiplication with arrays. By integrating this concept into a reading chart, we are covering many skills at once! A note:
Thanks to all who were able to make it to Open House on Thursday evening. We appreciate your support this year! For those who couldn't make it, please email me with any questions you may have about our class. I am looking forward to working with your children. Below is what we have been working on this week. You can ask your child about these concepts. Also, have your child review place value or write numbers in standard, expanded or word form!

Math: 
We are setting up our interactive math notebooks. We are reviewing place value (place: a location or spot, value: the amount or worth) and how numbers have a specific place and worth. We played "Place Value Scoot" today. This is where individual task cards sit on each student's desk. Students complete the problem and then move or "scoot" in a sequence to another desk and answer the problem card on that desk & so on... this is more fun than a worksheet and great for kinesthetic learners. We can play scoot in many subjects. The questions today asked students to write numbers in standard, word and expanded form. They also asked us the value of numbers in a certain place. You can review this with your child by having them write numbers you provide for them in any of the 3 ways. You can also have them tell you the value of that number.

Math vocabulary:
digits: the symbols 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9
standard form: 967
expanded form: 900+60+7 (you write out the numbers like you say them and connect them with +)
word form: nine hundred sixty-seven

the value of 3 in 346 = 300
the value of the 4 = 40

Reading:
We have the reading Ohio Achievement Assessment in October. So we are working on some test prep skills and how to read directions/understand what the directions ask us to do. We have an interactive reading notebook and are using our first read aloud, My Father's Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett, to model story mapping &  story journaling. We are also practicing our close reading skills by finding words in short passages that help us to draw inferences.

Reading vocabulary:
literal language: the exact meaning
figurative language: an expression or way of comparing one thing to another
idiom: type of figurative language
prefix:   word part that comes at the beginning of a word
suffix: word part that comes at the end of a word

We have had a great 2 1/2 days in 3rd grade! We've spent our time getting organized, learning procedures and routines and generally getting settled. Next week, we will put these lessons into practice and begin our regular schedule complete with content lessons.

There is no homework this week. I encourage students to READ and practice math facts as we gear up for our third grade year.

NOTE:
School Picture Day:  Wednesday, Aug 28.

Open House/Parent Night: THURSDAY, Aug 29 7:00PM. I will explain procedures and routines and Morah Eva, Moreh Dror and I will explain what you can expect from us in our classrooms. We look forward to seeing you there!

Welcome back!

Hello Third Grade Explorers!

Another school year is almost upon us.

I am sad to say that I won't be able to attend the CTA picnic on the 18th, but I will be available at Jeffrey Mansion park on Tuesday, August 13 from 6:00PM-7:30PM. I will be there with Miss Tanenbaum from 1st grade & Mrs. Buster from 2nd. This information is available in my school welcome letter which should be arriving to your houses next week.

Enjoy what is left of summer. I will see you on August 13 or on the first day of school on August 21!
